LOVELY, DARK, AND DEEP
(2023)
Directed and written by: Teresa Sutherland
I walked into the forest with Campbell, leery of things that go bump in the night, and came out wishing fiction were truer than fact.
Georgina Campbell stars as Lennon, a new park ranger on the job in the same forest her sister was lost in years ago. Still searching for her sister all these years later, Lennon has trouble letting go of her past, fitting in with her fellow rangers, and being mindful of her surroundings because a part of her still lives in the past when her sister was with her.
Whenever she is in the woods she secretly looks for her sister. In every shadow, behind every tree, in every mysterious sound, she looks for her. In the forest alone all by herself she slowly adjusts to her new daily life. Walking alone in the woods, eating foods meant to last a lifetime, and reading books to pass the time.
One day the rangers are called to search for a missing woman named Sara. We don’t know a lot about Sara, but we do know she won’t make it long alone in the forest. Although Lennon is eager to prove herself worthy of her new station, her ranger captain advises her to stay at headquarters. She does not listen.
Day becomes night and soon enough she finds herself in unfamiliar surroundings. I’ll leave the summary there.
If you do not have Speechify, here is a song to set the mood of the movie
“Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories, kill nothing but time.”
-LOVELY, DARK, AND DEEP
The atmosphere was unsettling and Georgina Campbell as Lennon was well-casted. Campbell does fear and anxiety well. Her fear face is pretty scary. I recently watched Campbell in THE WATCHERS, and I am a big fan. She has a movie coming up called PSYCHO KILLER that looks like something to add to your list.
“And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.” John Muir
The soundtrack was ok, nothing stands out as being timed well, and the mood was effective, so it did its job. The movie was great and I had a fun time watching it. Next on my list is T.I.M.
I will put in the comment section how to watch LOVELY, DARK, AND DEEP for free. T.I.M. is currently streaming on Hulu.
